Jonathan Reveals Real Threats to African Politics, Calls for Electoral Reforms

Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan has identified electoral manipulation as one of the biggest threats facing democracy in Africa.

Speaking at the 2025 Goodluck Jonathan Foundation (GJF) Democracy Dialogue in Accra, Ghana, Jonathan stressed that when democracy fails to meet people's expectations, it breeds desperation and paves the way for authoritarianism.

He urged African leaders and stakeholders to embrace a form of democracy that guarantees a better future where the voices of children and citizens matter.

"Democracy in the African continent is going through a period of strain and risk of collapse unless stakeholders come together to rethink and reform it," Jonathan said.

Highlighting problems with the electoral system, he pointed out that many manipulate processes to remain in power by all means, undermining the democratic ideal.

Jonathan emphasized that proper elections are crucial so that leaders who fail to perform can be voted out, ensuring accountability.

The former president's remarks come amid calls from other African leaders for reforms to protect and strengthen democratic institutions.
